This page provides information about how your personal data is used within Skjáttan and your rights in this connection.

1. Data Controller

Gjaldstovan owns and maintains Skjáttan. You may contact the Gjaldstovan Data Protection Officer regarding the processing of Personal Data:

2. User Database

When you are registered as a user of Skjáttan

The first time you log into Skjáttan, Gjaldstovan will register:

  • P-tal
  • The time when you accepted the terms and conditions for Skjáttan
  • Information about the device, i.e. the device you used to log into Skjáttan

Gjaldstovan uses this information to maintain a user database. The purpose of the user database is to make it possible for you to use Skjáttan efficiently.

When using Skjáttan:

Every time you log into Skjáttan, Gjaldstovan will process information about the device, i.e. the smart phone or tablet, that you use to log in. The purpose of this is to check if you are still using the same device. It is only possible to have Skjáttan in one device at the time.

Gjaldstovan will also register which cards and pages you visit in Skjáttan. This log will be deleted after 10 weeks. The purpose of this is to have statistics of the use of Skjáttan.

3. Samleikakort (Digital ID card)

Samleikakort is a digital solution by Gjaldstovan and is available on Skjáttan

Gjaldstovan is the data controller of the information in the Samleikakort.

The purpose of the Samleikakort is to provide citizens in the Faroese society a digital ID card to identify with in regard to various services. 

When you use the Samleikakort, this information will be retrieved from the National People Register:

  • Your name
  • Your age
  • Your P-tal
  • Your address

Be careful with the information in the Samleikakort and only share this information with persons of relevance.  

It is voluntary to use the Samleikakort and no one can require you to show the card. If you, under some circumstances do not show your Samleikakort, it can result in not getting access to certain services that require you to identify yourself.

4. Driving License 

The driving license is a digital service from Akstovan. The driving license i available in Skjáttan.

The owner of a physical driving license can also access the digital driving license in Skjáttan.

When using the digital driving license, personal information about you will be retrieved from Akstovan’s registry. This is the same information that is displayed on your physical driving license.

Akstovan is data controller of the information in the the driving license registry, while Gjaldstovan is data processor. You can contact the data protection officer of Akstovan on this email address dpo@akstovan.fo.

5. Purpose for processing your personal data

The purpose of processing you personal data is to make it possible for you to use Skjáttan and the personal cards within Skjáttan in a satisfactory manner.

Gjaldstovan has the authority to process your personal data pursuant to the following:

  • The Faroese Data Protection Act § 8, stk. 1, nr. 3, Processing is necessary for compliance with a legal obligation to which the controller is subject.
  • The Faroese Data Protection Act § 16, stk. 1: “Public authorities may process data concerning identification numbers with a view to unique identification or as file numbers.”

Akstovan has the authority to process your personal data pursuant to the following:

  • The Faroese Data Protection Act § 8, stk. 1, nr. 3, Processing is necessary for compliance with a legal obligation to which the controller is subject. (non-sensitive personal information)
  • The Faroese Data Protection Act § 8, stk. 1, nr. 5, Processing is necessary for the performance of a task carried out in the public interest or in the exercise of official authority vested in the controller. (non-sensitive personal information)
  • The Faroese Data Protection Act § 12, stk. 1, nr. 2, Processing is based on law and § 13, stk. 1 og stk. 2, nr. 3, regarding criminal convictions and offences (sensitive personal data)
  • The Faroese Data Protection Act § 16, stk. 1: “Public authorities may process data concerning identification numbers with a view to unique identification or as file numbers.”

6. How does Gjaldstovan store your personal data

The data in your cards are retrieved  and updated daily via Heldin from the database of the authority that is responsible for the specific card. Gjaldstovan has a centralized storage of this data.

Skjáttan is stored in Landsnet (in the Faroe Islands).

Your device hosts a cache of your data. The purpose of this is to make it possble for you to use Skjáttan when you are offline.

7. Distribution of personal information in your cards (Third party)

If you show your cards for a specific service, you simultaneously permit this person to access your personal information that are on your cards.

Do not show your cards, if you

  • do not feel safe showing the information to another party
  • do not feel that the other party has an objective motive with getting the information

When showing your information, the other party will access the same information that you yourself see on the cards.

8. Your rights

Pursuant to current legislation, you have various rights in connection with the processing of your personal data.

Please contact the Data Protection Officer at Gjaldstovan if you wish to exercise your rights.

9. Appeals

You can appeal to the Data Protection Agency on the processing of your personal data.  Information on how to contact the Data Protection Agency is available on their webpage, dat.fo
